The Mercedes-Benz Heckflosse (Fintail) is based upon the W111 chassis from which models such as the 250, 280 and even 300 were manufactured. Most Fintails were used as family sedans, workhorse cars and even taxis and are often not considered as valuable or collectible as the models I mentioned above.

Nicknamed the Heckflosse (Fintail), the W111 220 featured small fins on the rear quarters which Mercedes Benz designer Friedrich Geiger stated were for parking assistance. The idea was that the fin was a visual aid for determining the position of the rear corner and side.

The Mercedes-Benz W111 was a chassis code given to a range of Mercedes-Benz vehicles produced between 1959 and 1971, including four-door saloons (1959-1968) and two-door coupés and cabriolets (1961-1971). Their bodywork featured distinctive tailfins that gave the models their Heckflosse nickname — German for "fintail". [3]

This series of cars are nicknamed Heckflosse, which means 'Fintail' in German. The sedan variants feature a more defined fintail, while the coupe and cabriolet sport a much cleaner rear end. The W111 eventually generated two variants, the more upscale W112, and the more accessible W110.

The W111 series from Mercedes-Benz, commonly known as the Fintail, or Heckflosse, in German, caught his fancy. Given the original W111's performance at the 1960 Monte Carlo Rally, where three 220 SE sedans filled the top three spots, it's no wonder Michael saw a righteous rally machine in a 1967 230 S.

Internally, the series was designated W111. The M127 2.2 litre straight-six engine was to be carried over from the pontons with revisions to carburetion and valve gear, giving slightly better acceleration and improved torque throughout the engine speed range for the three proposed models.

For all Mercedes' reputation for engineering perfectionism and its storied racing heritage, the real appeal of the three-pointed star — immortalized in song by Janis Joplin and many others — has always been snob appeal, a cachet to match all but the most elite luxury cars.

A nice intermediate step between the Heckflosse and the W108/9, though as well as blunting the fins they also raised the trunkline between what remained of them. These cars were always a standout.. I have repeatedly seen real-world proof that the W111 Mercedes 2-door doesn't quite rise to that level. Reply. Paul Niedermeyer. Posted.
